PASSHE LGBTQIA Consortium
On March 26 and 27, 2009, members of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) universities met for the Building Bridges Over Walls: LGBT Issues in Higher Education Conference. From that meeting, we recognized the need for a PASSHE wide group to address concerns for people who identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, or questioning and their allies.
Led by Dan Burdick, of Edinboro University, and Rita Drapkin, of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the PASSHE Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, and Allies (LGBTQIA) Consortium was formed and met for the first time October 30 and 31, 2009. The mission of the PASSHE LGBTQIA Consortium is to ensure and strengthen a visible, safe, equitable, inclusive, and welcoming community for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions throughout PASSHE and its constituencies through education, advocacy, assessment, community engagement, and activism.
The Consortium is working to accomplish this mission by networking and working toward change at the state level. Members will also support activity on the local level by working with individual universities in the system. We hope you will join us as we work toward this mission. If you are interested in working with the Consortium, please visit our Subcommittees page and/or contact one of our co-chairs, Tara Mitchell or Susan Turell. To find out more about becoming involved in your local community, please visit our Local Page.
